Hackers Hijack Facebook's Twitter Account

On Friday, hackers briefly took over Facebook’s accounts on Twitter and Instagram by exploiting third-party software.

“Hi, we are OurMine. Well, even Facebook is hackable,” wrote the group, which was in control of the @Facebook account and @Messenger account on Twitter. They also managed to hijack the same official accounts on Instagram, which Facebook also owns.

Twitter was quick to boot the hackers out. Less than ten minutes after the initial tweet, the post from OurMine at @Facebook was gone. “As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we locked the compromised account and are working closely with our partners at Facebook to restore them,” the company told PCMag.

Twitter added that the accounts were taken over via a “third-party platform,” but refrained from naming the provider. However, the tweet from the OurMine hackers was sent out using Khoros, a platform companies can use to manage their social media marketing. Clients can log in via the main Khoros portal by typing in their email address and password.

Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But presumably, the company has an account on Khoros to control its presence on Twitter and Instagram. Somehow, the OurMine hackers managed to break into the same account on Khoros, allowing them to make social media posts in Facebook’s name.

OurMine likely used the same tactic last month to hijack more than a dozen Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts belonging to NFL teams. Posts OurMine made from those accounts also showed that they came from the Khoros platform.

It isn’t the first time the OurMine hackers have hijacked a Facebook social media account. Back in 2016, the group briefly took over Mark Zuckerberg’s Twitter account as well. In that case, OurMine likely exploited how Zuckerberg used the weak password “dadada” to secure his Twitter account.
