Not even winning an Oscar can make you forget Apple’s disastrous MacBook keyboards. On Sunday, Taika Waititi won an adapted screenplay Academy Award for JoJo Rabbit. But during a Q&A with the press, he couldn’t help but rant about the company’s laptop keyboards.

“Apple needs to fix those keyboards,” he said. “They are impossible to write on.”

The problem he's describing dates back to 2015, when Apple swapped out the traditional “scissor-switch” keyboards in its MacBook for new “butterfly” keyboard tech. The switches allowed Apple to create a thinner, quieter keyboard. But they generated a storm of consumer complaints for breaking easily when a speck of dust got underneath them. To fix it, Apple had to switch out the entire keyboard deck, which cost $400 to $700.

“They make me want to go back to PCs,” Waititi said last night. “Because PC keyboard, the bounce back for your fingers is way better... Apple keyboards are horrendous.”

Waititi went on to complain about how the cramped size of the keyboards were aggravating his shoulder problems. “We just gotta fix those keyboards. The WGA needs to step in and actually do something,” he said.

The WGA is the Writers' Guild of America, and Waititi was ostensibly responding to a question about what writers should be asking for in the next round of talks with the guild. He likely didn't answer the reporter's question, but the rant made for some good headlines.

The good news is that Apple dropped the butterfly keyboard tech in the company’s latest 16-inch MacBook model, which was released in November. The product instead uses the traditional scissor-switch tech, which is easy to repair and should offer the bounce back Waititi is looking for his fingers.
